Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (lgbtq+) individuals in Wisconsin enjoy many of the rights and obligations as heterosexual individuals. However the transgender community may encounter challenges not faced by cisgender residents due to gender identity discrimination not being specifically addressed in Wisconsins anti discrimination laws or hate crime legislation. Same sex marriage has been legally recognized in Wisconsin since October 6 2014 following a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court regarding the Wolf v. Walker case. The state prohibits discrimination based on orientation statewide and includes sexual orientation as a protected category in its hate crime laws. Wisconsin was an adopter of these protections back in 1982 setting a precedent for other states.

Wisconsin holds the distinction of being the state to elect an openly lgbtq+ U.S. Senator, Tammy Baldwin from the Democratic Party. Recent surveys indicate that two thirds of Wisconsinites express support, for same sex marriage as of 2021.
